I found that this article caught my eye because of its interesting title. It made me want to know what newspapers are doing to say that ‘smart is the new sexy’. Newspapers are using social media to get attention from younger readers that turn to electronic sources to get their news. The Newspaper Association of America is hoping to promote the value newspaper have through social media and digital outlets.
The campaign uses the word “sexy” to appeal to people without promoting sex. The advertising campaign is promoting newspapers to a younger generation because by using social media they are hoping to increase newspaper readership. They are also encouraging newspaper readers to submit videos on YouTube and Facebook that explain a readers favorite thing about newspapers. This campaign is allowing newspapers to embrace the main cause for the decrease of newspaper subscriptions.
This new approach for the newspapers can make newspaper readership increase if people follow through. The mind of readers has to believe that “smart is the new sexy.”

I am a PR major so this article is very interesting to me how newspapers are utilizing social media to appeal to the younger generation. I think that it is somewhat of a good idea however, they might want to consider focusing their time and resources on a way to get people to pay for the content that they are reading online. I think that it is funny that even newspapers are resorting to using sex to sell its product. I guess when you are desperate to save your business you will resort to anything. I have been waiting to see what the newspaper business was going to do to generate sales and I definitely never imagined this.
ReplyDeleteSmart is not the new sexy and most people hate to read the newspaper thats why people watch the news. Well I know I hate to read and thats why I watch the news. Every since the invention of the internet people have had access to the news online as well. I know that people will continue to get their news from tv and online. It is pretty much over for newspapers these days. The newspaper is one of those obsolete type of inventions like the cassette tape I mean who has those anymore? The newspaper just needs to convert to being strictly online.
