In this article Michael Z. Newman gives an analysis of how certain generations attention spans is directly connected to what shows they grew up watching specifically the television program Sesame Street. It is important to think about how media has the power to stunt cognitive functioning in American culture.
The first main point of the article analyzes Sesame Street in depth. Looking at how the program is broken up into segments and how this breaks up the show into pieces. This was so that children watching the show could focus on Sesame Street and not look at the distractions that could come up during the show.
The second main point of this article is to look at media today and how well it holds our attention. Newman looked at programs that targeted the generation of children who grew up with Sesame Street. In conclusion, the article gave a few explanations that explain the ‘short attention span’ and though it may be connected to media, it is just a theory.

Thank you for sharing. I feel you did a great job in analyzing this article. I agree with you and the argument that the media has too much influence over young people. I feel that the media needs to consider ethics when targeting people. I feel this it is unethical to target children, even if it is through sesame street, because they can not make mature decisions.
ReplyDeleteI think you truly grasped the concepts of this article and did a great job in explaining it. Thank you again for sharing and I really enjoyed your blog.
It is difficult to believe that attention spans are not affected by the advent of the media. Information is thrown at us at a more rapid pace. It is difficult to absorb it all. No mind can retain all the information. The mind jumps from one thing to another. Even the creator of the remote control said that his device contributed to the shortening of the attention span. The mind that reads is able to process information in a perpetually continuity manner. Building blocks of information where as the T.V. immersed brain shuts off unless it is continually entertained within its attention span.
